DEATH: DAVID BOWIE
MEANING: Endings, beginnings, change, transformation, transition
Death may signal and ending, but it also represents a new beginning. Though the card is drawn on the background of a black, starry night, Death's banner is one of a rising sun, representing immortality and rebirth. When one life is snuffed out, it is merely making way for a new beginning.
David Bowie (1947-2016) is perhaps the perfect representation of Death. During his life, his fearless transformations of identity hallmarked his career. Just two days prior to his death, David Bowie released his final album, Black Star. Many consider the album to be a prophetic work that Bowie produced as a prediction of his own death. The term "black star" is the name for the transitional state between a collapsed star and singularity (a state of infinite value) in physics. Here, Bowie is seen in his costume from the album's title track, wearing the button-eyed bandage mask from the Black Star song "Lazarus", but also still wearing his iconic makeup from the cover of the 1973 album Aladdin Sane.
